IN PART I OF Knowing His Call, both Sam and I were happy in Orange, TX, he as a church pastor, me a 911 Dispatcher. Change was in the wind following an unexpected call from a church in Orlando, FL…
Sam loved Orange and was really struggling with the thought of leaving. Wisely, he again called his mentors to spend time in prayer with them. Each mentor had discerned that he needed to go to the interview: this position was for him. It was affirming that three people in three different parts of the world, who did not know each other, all said exactly the same thing.
Sam and I packed our bags for the fourteen-hour drive to Orlando, sending the kids to be with their aunt and uncle. The entire drive to Florida, Sam wrestled with God. It can be difficult to discern where God would move you. Often, going to the possible location is the best way to test the call. Stepping out of your comfort zone and into the unknown is scary especially when you have kids. You want to know you are truly following God’s plan.
While Sam interviewed, I stayed in the hotel room. To this day, I remember an overwhelming sensation that this city would become my new home. The hard part was not being able to tell anyone what was going on. Finally, knowing that my sister was trustworthy, I called and asked her what it was like to move. I was 29 years old and had never lived anywhere but Orange, TX.
Upon returning home, life went on as usual. We did not hear anything from the church for over three weeks.
Eighteen months prior, realizing that we needed to move to a different school district, we put our house on the market. As those months drug on, I began to feel the house would sell when it was time for Sam and me to move much farther than just to another school district.
Three weeks after the interview the phone rang. The Orlando church was calling to ask Sam if he was still interested in the position. He acknowledged that he was still trying to discern the call, but, yes, he was interested. The next day after eighteen long months our house sold. It turned out to be so easy. The buyers agreed to a higher price than other offers we had received, plus they paid cash. We needed no further convincing: Sam had been called.
A week later the church in Orlando did offer Sam the position. Once again Sam consulted his mentors. Each one said they felt Orlando was where he was called to go. Sam could resist God no more, and accepted the position.
I want to emphasize how hard it can be to leave the places where we are comfortable. We like comfort. Sometimes God wants to take us out of our comfort zones into the unknown. All we can do is trust Him. I ask you today where God might be asking you to leave your comfort zone? I want to hear from you. You can comment below or email me at email@example.com. I look forward to hearing from you.
