New Beginnings
Little John
Our horse, Little John, came into our lives three years ago, but I have just started really learning to ride him. I lost most of the strength in my legs with Lyme Disease and it was a mental battle to convince myself I was strong enough to hop on and ride without help.
Little John and I are still getting to know each other as horse and rider. His biggest frustration with me is when I give him mixed signals. He flops his head around and I know I have totally confused him and we are both frustrated. Each time I get us in this situation, I must stop, relax, take a deep breath and collect myself. We then start again with a new command.
Lyme Disease
While riding the other day, I thought of how nice it would be if the rest of life could be as forgiving as Little John and let me have as many do overs as needed. I also thought about everything God has given me with this horse. The confidence and strength I have gained while spending time with him has given me many new beginnings.
When diagnosed with Lyme Disease I never thought I would get to do the activities I had previously done and some I still have not (I have not given up on a 21st marathon), but I never imagined the new things I would get to do. Where the enemy comes and tries to destroy, God comes in and makes all things new.
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” And the one sitting on the throne said, “Look, I am making everything new!” And then he said to me, “Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.” And he also said, “It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life.”
Rev 21:4-6 NLT
New Beginnings
When I read about the eighth Hebrew letter, the cheth or het ח, it reminds me of my experiences with Little John and all the new fun adventures God has provided through him.
As we saw in the last post, seven is the number of completion. Looking forward, the Cheth ח has the numerical value of eight. God took seven days to create the Heavens and the Earth. Eight represents the cycle starting over, or new beginnings.
The Hebrew word for new is chadash חדש which begins with the cheth ח. If we dig deeper into these three letters. The cheth ח is new beginnings. Remember, the daleth ד is the invitation into the spiritual realm. The last letter is the shin ש which means repetition and represents a fire, and a refining or cleansing. Combining these three together, we can say that new means that as we start over, we are once again invited into the spiritual realm, where we can begin the refining work within our heart and mind.
The Combining Of Man To God
Scholars say that six represents man, seven represents the divine, and eight, or the cheth ח, represents the combining of the two. The combining of man to God. They say this letter represents Jesus because it is through Him we have this divine closeness with God. When Jesus died on the cross, the curtain tore, and we gained direct access to God. Read more about the curtain here.
When we repent and accept Jesus as our Savior, He gives us a new beginning. We receive a new life in Christ. Just as the word chadash חדש means. When we accept Jesus into our hearts, we receive the invitation to go deeper. He invites us into sacred places where He refines us. He cleanses our hearts. This process is repetitive and with each cycle, we get closer to Him and become more like Him.
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT
In This New Life…
- With Jesus, we are never alone. (Heb 13:5)
- He gives us eternal life. (John 3:16)
- We are a new creation. (Gal 6:15)
- He washes our sins away. (Titus 3:5)
- We receive the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:8)
The list goes on and on. His mercies are never ending and are new every morning (Lam 3:22-23). I would love to hear how your life has changed since accepting Jesus as your Savior. Share in the comments below.

Salvation Prayer
If you have not accepted Jesus as your Savior, and would like to, pray this simple prayer. “Lord, thank you for sending your son, Jesus, to Earth to live as a man. I believe He died on the cross for my sins so that I could be forgiven, and after three days Jesus rose again from the grave and now sits at your right hand. Thank you that because of Jesus, I now have eternal life. Amen.”
If you prayed this prayer, I would love to hear from you. Fill out the form below to email me.
Love Letters
I assume by now you have noticed how the letters invite us to draw closer to God. They are like God’s love letters to us. With each one I study I feel my heart awaken a little more. I hope and pray you are feeling a spark of excitement when you read them too.
