We Will Remember Them
In cemeteries across this nation, we will place small American flags upon the graves of the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice. They did so in order to ensure the continued liberties and freedoms this nation provides. It is a time of remembrance and thanksgiving. A time to acknowledge those who heard the call to serve and went willingly into the battle. We give thanks for their courageous actions and their willingness to step forward even when faced with the gravest of odds. Sir Winston Churchill once said, “Courage is the first of human qualities because it is the quality that guarantees all the others.”
They Chose To Stand
Those who have witnessed firsthand the devastation and atrocity of war could easily argue that war should never happen again. Many would argue that we should avoid military conflict at all costs. They would say, there is no such thing as a “just war.”
Yet when you hear the testimonies of those who now know the reality of liberty because another stood up against the abuses of power, we can better understand when women and men step forward to put themselves in harm’s way and fight for the many who cannot do so.
It is in the lives of those who now enjoy such liberties that we hear the resounding testimony of those who died providing it. Abraham Lincoln stated, “Through their deeds, the dead of battle have spoken more eloquently for themselves than any of the living ever could. But we can only honor them by rededicating ourselves to the cause for which they gave a last full measure of devotion.”
Considering the sacrifice that so many have made, we have the responsibility to do all we can so others never need to place themselves in a situation where this kind of sacrifice is necessary. We that remain experiencing the freedoms provided should not take for granted that which we enjoy. Nor should we allow tyranny and abuse to rear their heads among us.
Take a moment of silence and remember…
The scriptures speak of the sacrifice Christ made to set us free from the penalty of sin. This provides great comfort in knowing that we are forgiven of the sin which causes our separation from a Holy and just God. We have received this good news freely, without cost to ourselves. This should cause a change in our hearts and in the way we live. It is in our living that we give testimony to what Christ has done for us. It is in our witness that people see the freedom provided for all who believe in the man who died in the Battle of Calvary. Then three days later rose victoriously as the vanquisher of sin and death.
“For the Fallen”
“They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.“
